Featured Artists: The Bad Trips

If you listened to “Between Now And Death, We Gonna Have A Party”, odds are you asked yourself who made the back-to-back pair of intergalactic surf songs sandwiched between the Talking Heads and Frank Zappa (starting @ 00:07:00).

Those other worldly sounds are made by none other than contemporary psych band the Bad Trips, featuring Grady Runyan of SF Experimental Outifit -Liquorball. (1989-present) Le ‘Trips are a one of a kind band from Xylanthia by way of a little beach town in California here to reconnect you to the source of all that is jammy.

Both songs, “Miracle of Marsh Chapel” and “War on Drugs”, are from their self-titled debut. Another song from that album – “if, if” – is heard on “Funk One Another, And Be Love”. You’ll undoubtedly hear more from these ambassadors of the Sirius Star System.

Their follow up album of recorded jam sessions is another deep space oddity that will creep into your head and nest at the controls. The transmission is riveting at times, softly hypnotic and dissonant at others. Open lulls you into a quiet space and occasionally rips your from it. The soundscapes conjure images of a frozen landscape light-years from the nearest pretentious thought or even a gentle touch. Early on, “Turn Up The Groove, Reveal The Light” gets into the feedback and groove of “Location Four”. A little later on, “Dance of the Mountain Poppies” finds its way into the mix with its meandering staccato form blending seamlessly into the heavy dub rhythms of Ranking Dread. There is more good stuff coming from the Bad Trips and many other artists and many more brilliant moments of recorded music in future volumes of the Join My Cult Mix Series.
